Payment Processing Officer
Herts Interpreting & Translation Service
Herts Interpreting and Translation Service
Hemel Hempstead · 22.5 hours per week – £13.40 per hour
Full time Equivalent Salary: £25,781
Herts Interpreting and Translation Service (HITS) is one of the largest providers of interpreting and translation services to the NHS, local authorities and criminal justice agencies across the home counties and the East of England. We work in over 300 languages, and every booking helps someone get the care, advice or representation they are entitled to.
Our workload has grown, and we are looking for someone organised and numerate to join our small finance team in Hemel Hempstead.
The role
You will be at the centre of how money moves through HITS – processing interpreter assignment forms, producing monthly activity reports and invoices, preparing interpreter payment reports, handling reconciliations, and chasing outstanding payments. You will also be the person customers and interpreters speak to about payment and invoice queries, so a calm, helpful manner matters as much as accuracy.
It is a varied job in a small team. Some days are steady processing; others are month-end, when everything needs to be right and on time.
What we are looking for
• Solid experience in finance or data processing, and confidence with numbers
• Faultless attention to detail – the kind of person who spots the figure that does not look right
• Good IT skills, particularly Microsoft Office, and experience of working with databases
• Excellent communication skills, both written and on the phone
• Confidence with Excel beyond the basics (formulas, pivot tables, lookups)
• Well organised, able to juggle several deadlines and work on your own initiative
• An understanding of confidentiality and information security, and a commitment to valuing diversity
Desirable, but not essential
We are steadily bringing AI tools into our finance processes to cut down repetitive manual work. If you already have any of the following, do tell us – but you will not be at a disadvantage if you do not:
• Experience of using AI tools such as Microsoft Copilot/Claude to support finance work – checking and cleaning data, reconciling records, summarising booking information or drafting reports
• An understanding of where AI tools need care – keeping client and interpreter data secure, and checking output before relying on it
Why HITS
HITS is part of Community Action Dacorum, a charity. The work is commercial, but the purpose is not – the surplus we generate goes back into the community. You will be joining a small, experienced finance team where your work is visible and your ideas for doing things better are listened to. Home – HITS
