Role Title: Junior Education Officer

Reports to: Deputy Site Manager

The primary role of this post is to plan and lead activities, developing of new experiences and communicate proactively across the team to ensure effective delivery of Celtic Harmony’s Prehistory Day & Overnight Experiences for schools, family visitors and volunteers.

Celtic Harmony is an award-winning charity, providing hands-on cultural heritage education of ancient Britain since 1998 to increase understanding of the natural world and create a more sustainable way of life for future generations. We specialise in the creation and delivery of Prehistory experiences in a reconstructed Prehistory settlement, at Celtic Harmony Camp, near Hertford.

Celtic Harmony has been awarded the Council for Learning Outside the Classroom Quality Badge for high quality outdoor experiences, is pledged with ‘Brilliant Residential’ campaign and holds the Visit England ‘Good to Go’ mark, as a safe and stimulating setting aiming to improve wellbeing and resilience.

The Junior Education & Catering Officer provides engaging Prehistory workshops such as Stone Age Hunter-Gatherers, Bronze Age Potters and Iron Age Celtic Warriors, dressed in costume. The job is varied and includes assistance with catering, delivering of activities, site maintenance and communication.

Relationships

  • The Junior Education Officer is accountable to the Deputy Site Manager for the high standard delivery of the education programme.
  • Junior Education Officer takes an active part in daily team debrief and weekly staff meetings and other communication as per internal communication strategy.
  • Junior Education Officer is responsible for developing relationships with teachers/visitors, gathering feedback and promoting education days/events.
  • Communicating with teachers / family visitors and using the database to record customer history, as per enquiries / school operations standard.
  • Proactively contribute in team meetings and initiatives for new activity, communication and fundraising projects.
  • Supports senior management in training and coordinating part-time team members, assistants, trainees and volunteers.

Location: Celtic Harmony Camp, the Iron Age settlement, Brickendon, Hertford, Hertfordshire SG13 8NY.

Main Duties:

Planning

  • Preparation of school / event day rotas / daily briefs / door book /remote learning.
  • Consultation of rotas with Deputy Site Manager for feedback.
  • Preparation of contingency activities in case of wet weather
  • Coordination of stock of activity resources, shop products as per orders procedure.
  • Preparation of admin / communications projects for assistants / trainees.

Delivery and Follow Up

Planning & Preparation

  • Preparation of Camp for school, family and volunteers as per operations standards
  • Preparing / Tidying Camp Activity Workshop Areas as per Camp Standard book
  • Ensure all information and relevant forms are in place before visits
  • Ensure facilities (Container, Café, Toilets, Prehistory Centre, Shop) are in order and presented in to a high standard ready for use by stakeholders as per Daily Checklists.
  • Complete training in and leading all types of themed day trips and overnight stays for schools and family visitors, as per industry standards and in-house training.
  • Skilled and able to demonstrate: storytelling with range of Celtic folklore, friction fire lighting techniques, flint knapping a tool, archery ‘have a go’/short course and develop other primitive skills.

Delivery

  • Lead school day and residential trips, as per the schools operations standard and industry standards, including overnight supervision if needed.
  • Coordination of general public events including delivering activities and talks on weekends and school holidays.
  • Read and adhere to Health & Safety checks e.g. risk assessments
  • Serve food as per in-house and food hygiene standards for lunchtime service on the days out and dinner/breakfast service during overnight stays.

Follow up

  • Gather feedback information from all visitors via paper feedback forms
  • Ensure visitor follow up with email/feedback forms/responding to feedback online/electronically/social media and to encourage rebooking
  • Ensure data collated electronically on spreadsheets and on the ground analysis of findings.

Experience Development & Impact

  • Develop new activities and events and improve operational standards.
  • Collating data (feedback) to evaluate programme

Catering

  • Ensure café and eating areas are cleaned as per checklists.
  • Serve drinks/food in café and basic food prep when necessary
  • Breakfast and packed lunch preparation in café during overnight stays.
  • Ensure stock check is taken and communicated to Chef / Heritage Director

Leadership

  • Take part in team daily team debrief and staff meetings
  • Prepare tasks and delegate to assistants and trainees, in consultation with Deputy Site Manager.
  • Coordinate volunteer tasks and work experience programmes

Visual Impact and Facilities Presentation

  • Maintenance and development of facilities, leading tasks, working independently / with colleagues and volunteers under supervision of the Heritage Ranger.

Communications

  • Communication news / impact to visitors verbally / social media / mailshot / electronically to promote benefits of programme.
  • Assisting with fundraising and communication to potential funders and current stakeholders supporting Celtic Harmony

This role profile is not exhaustive; it will be subject to periodic review and may be amended to meet the changing needs of the business. The post holder will be expected to participate in this process and we would aim to reach agreement to the changes.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: £25,000.00 per year
